The cast of the musical adaptation of The Color Purple is coming together! Recently, they announced that Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks will join the film.

NEW THE COLOR PURPLE CAST ANNOUNCEMENT

The new casting announcement happened during ABC’s Soul of a Nation special, Screen Queens Rising. I have to say it’s really exciting news! Fantasia Barrino (American Idol) and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is The New Black) will be playing Celie and Sofia. Along with Barrino and Brooks other announced castings for the film are Taraji P. Henson (Empire) as Shug Avery, Corey Hawkins (In the Heights) as Harpo, and H.E.R. as Squeak. On top of that, H.E.R. is also rumored to be working with the creative team to write a new song for the film.

In Steven Speilberg’s original The Color Purple film adaptation, Oprah Winfrey plays the role of Sofia. This role also earned her an Oscar nomination. In a personal zoom video, you can see her emotionally passing the torch to Danielle Brooks who cannot wait to make Oprah proud.
