Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn came out in 1968. Telling the story of a unicorn who finds out it is the last of its kind. The story follows said unicorn as it tries to find out what happens to the other unicorns. The book is a best-seller, selling about five million copies. It is even on the list of the “All-Time Best Fantasy Novels”.

These new adaptions will be the first adaption in years. Due to legal battles, any works on it have been delayed until now. Before this, Arthur Rankin Jr, Jules Bass, and Beagle himself came out with an animated film in 1982. This adaption stars Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, Alan Arkin, and Christopher Lee. Although at first, it underperforms, it is now a cult classic among fans.

In addition to the animated film, the Intiman Playhouse in Seattle gave a play of The Last Unicorn in 1988. Following that, one more stage production came out in the Promethean Theater in 2009. Then the legal battles begin, and no other adaptations came up until now.
