Today Netflix gave us our first look at the upcoming Pinocchio film from Guillermo del Toro. You can check out the Offical Teaser trailer below. While the movie is animated, this will certainly not be the same Pinocchio you might remember from the famous Disney animated film.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT DEL TORO’S PINOCCHIO

Scheduled to release on Netflix in December 2022, the upcoming film is will take place during the 1930s in Italy. Which for anyone who is familiar with world history, puts it squarely during the fascist era for the country. The film is described as a dark retelling of the fairytale involving the wooden puppet. The musical fantasy film will be made by using stop-motion animation. It will focus heavily on the Pinocchio story told in the original 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi.

Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Academy Award® winner Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, with Academy Award® winner Christoph Waltz and Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton.

Guillermo Del Toro

The film has been a personal pet project for del Toro who has been developing the film since 2008. The director has stated in previous interviews the impact the story of Pinocchio had on him in his youth.

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,”

Netflix acquired the rights back in 2018 allowing del Toro to bring his vision for Pinocchio to life. Over the last few years, Netflix has made concerted efforts to bolster its offering of animated films. Time will tell if they will be able to compete directly with the other animation juggernauts such as Disney and Pixar.
