Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a breath of fresh air for fans of the series. The film releases on physical media on February 1st, 2022. Since its release in theaters in November, the film grossed $195 million at the worldwide box office. The 2016 version is still beating it out there, but strangely, the domestic box office total for Afterlife is now higher. That film sits at $127 million, with 2016’s GB coming in at around $128 million. With Afterlife still in theaters, it’ll likely equal or pass that number within a couple of weeks.
It’s also interesting to see the box office totals because one film was released in the middle of a pandemic and the other was not. The other thing in favor of Afterlife was the budget was much lower than the 2016 film. Paul Feig‘s film came in at $140 million and Afterlife was made for between $70-80 million. So taking into account marketing, the film is still making a profit. These gross totals also aren’t taking into account Blu-ray, digital, rental, or on-demand buys either. With plenty of people still avoiding the theaters due to the ongoing pandemic, Ghostbusters: Afterlife should have a nice boost for home video.
It’s not guaranteed that we’re getting a sequel to Afterlife though. Hopefully, it does well on home video to show Sony that we want more from the Ghostbusters.
