Exciting news today for fans of the FX series Justified. As reported by Variety back in March 2021, a new Justified series was rumored to be in development. However, today that rumor was made official and Justified: City Primeval, a new limited series, has been ordered by FX, with star Timothy Olyphant set to return as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens.
Justified Revival Announced By FX
The new series will take its inspiration from Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. Leonard originally created the character, Raylan Givens, and made appearances in several of his novels, including the novella “Fire in the Hole” which would later become the basis for the original Justified series.
According to the official synopsis, the new show is set to pick up several years after the end of the original series, with Raylan Givens still living in Miami working as U.S. Marshal and now co-parenting his teenage daughter.
Also set to return to work on the series is original showrunner, Graham Yost. Yost along with Timothy Olyphant will executive produce. Dave Andron who served as a first-run writer on the original, alongside director Michael Dinner, will also handle showrunner responsibilities. Joining Yost and Olyphant as executive producers are Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, Peter Leonard, Taylor Elmore, and Chris Provenzano. Elmore and Provenzano will also contribute as writers on the show
No other casting news is available at this time, nor word on if we can expect series favorite Walton Goggins and his memorable portrayal of Boyd Crowder will make an appearance.
Justified: City Primeval Synopsis
“Having left the hollers of Kentucky eight years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 14-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind.
A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell’s lawyer, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught in between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive.”
Momentum For Olyphant
The return to the role of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is the second time in recent memory that Timothy Olyphant has returned to a well-known role. In 2019 Olyphant returned as another lawman, Seth Bullock in the HBO follow-up film for Deadwood. The announcement of the Justified revival, continues a run of recent success for Olyphant who more recently appeared as Cobb Vanth in the second season of the DIsney+ series The Mandalorian.
The original Justified series was a critical success for FX during its 6 seasons from 2010 to 2015. In today’s day and age of revivals and reboots, it’s no surprise to see FX look to one of its most successful shows to bring back to the screen.
