It’s been rumored for awhile now, but NBC confirmed today that they’re going ahead with a pilot for a reboot of Quantum Leap. The 1990s series was a success and ran for five seasons. It starred Scott Bakula and the late Dean Stockwell. Now, La Brea co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt are handling the show with original creator Don Bellisario. The new series is set in the present day with a new cast. Dr. Sam Beckett (Bakula) has disappeared and a new group is starting up the Quantum Leap project.
Beckett’s disappearance is explained by the fact that Bakula is currently not signed on for the reboot. According to sources, he is aware of the reboot and has had conversations about getting involved with it. Dean Stockwell, who was the co-lead on the original series passed away last November at the age of 85.
Fans of the original series are sure to be disappointed by the news that Scott Bakula isn’t currently involved. NBC and Universal have tried to reboot Quantum Leap at various points but this is the first successful pitch they’ve had. We’ll have to see how the studio handles Stockwell and Bakula not being on this series.

They MUST include Scott Bakula in this reboot of Quantum Leap!! He was the heart and soul of the show and why it worked so well..Please do the right thing and include him…Loyal fans of the show will be Extremely disappointed if he isn’t included….
I was a huge fan of the original. The series finale left me and I’m sure some fans scratching their heads . I may check it out ,but that doesn’t mean I won’t be highly skeptical . It would be hard to recreate such an iconic show. Scott Backula and Dean Stockwell had an amazing chemistry and that’s one thing that will be impossible to reboot.
The reboot will be a hot mess if Scott Bakula has no part at least write him in with a recurring role as Sam Beckett. In the original if I’m not mistaken he did leap home in the finale of the show. Have him give advise to the leaper. By first them finding him. Al should be honored with mentioning his real death. We shouldn’t forget to include the original. Even bring back some of the old guest star characters to see what happened to them. I loved the original and learned at lot watching the show.
Not very difficult to do without Bakula (although would be very nice if he were involved). Just have to name drop him once in a while kind of like they do with Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor in the Fast movies.
I venture to say that loyal fans will be more than “extremely disappointed” if Scott Bakula isn’t the main character in this reboot. I would say fans will be staying away in droves. I know I will. If he’s not the main character, don’t bother with the reboot.
It would be nice to acknowledge Bakula role in the project later on. Running into him briefly during one of their leaps. Catching him up on what has happened to the family and friends he left behind. And he decided to stay where he’s at since his jumps are longer now..
