A dark and creepy basement office. A mysterious fire. An ominous warning from the neighbors. As far as spooks go, Archive 81 is already not pulling any punches.
The trailer for the Netflix horror series arrived today, so check out the first round of scares for yourself below.
In case you didn’t already know, the Archive 81 series is based on the horror podcast of the same name. The show adaptation will see archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) take on a job restoring some damaged tapes from the 90s. As Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) explains in the trailer, the tapes were meant as a sort of cultural documentary. But it quickly becomes clear to Dan (and Melody) that something isn’t quite right with the Visser apartment building.
The series is set for eight hour-long episodes, which will jump back and forth in time between Melody’s explorations in the 90s and Dan’s work in the present. As Dan gets deeper and deeper into his restoration project, he becomes obsessed with Melody’s fate.
Archive 81 comes from showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, who previously worked on The Vampire Diaries and The Boys. Horror icon James Wan (The Conjuring, Malignant) produces the show. Rebecca Thomas (Stranger Things) also produces, along with Antoine Douaihy and Paul Harris Boardman.
In addition to Athie and Shihabi, the series stars Martin Donovan as Virgil Davenport; Matt McGorry as Mark Higgins; Julia Chan as Annabelle Cho; Evan Jonigkeit as Samuel; and Ariana Neal as Jess.
Archive 81 premieres January 14 on Netflix.
