The Hitcher has been in need of a Blu-Ray version for a long time now. Last year, writer Eric Red teased that we’d finally be getting a Blu-Ray copy of the film. Now, thanks to Second Sight Films in the UK, not only are we getting a BR version, but they found the original camera negative. That means that a 4K restoration and release is possible and happening. The company announced earlier this morning in a post on their Twitter account.
Unfortunately for the US and other consumers around the world, the Blu-Ray is region-locked to Region B. Fortunately though, 4K is region-free, so anyone can buy that copy of the movie and watch it. This is fantastic news for fans of the film and the legendary Rutger Hauer.
The Hitcher came out in 1986 and also starred C. Thomas Howell as a young man who makes the mistake of picking up the murderous hitchhiker played by Hauer. It was written by Eric Red and directed by Robert Harmon.
There’s no word on a release date besides the Tweet saying it’ll happen later this year. I know I’ll be picking this one up upon release, how about you?
