This is a story all about how… well, you know. Peacock’s fresh take on The Fresh Prince just released our first look at the series.
The teaser clip shows newcomer Jabari Banks as Will, who steps into the kicks of original Fresh Prince Will Smith.
Check out your first look at Bel-Air below.
Set in modern-day America, Bel-Air is a serialized one-hour dramatic analogue of the 90’s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.
As far as teasers go, this one serves as more of a reminder the series exists than anything else. The voiceover teasing the original theme song and a few references to the original series floating in the water (like the dice) are really the only hints we get here; we don’t get to see any characters besides Banks’ Will, and we don’t get any indication of the plot.
The whole “underwater promo” has very CW-like energy to me actually, and I’m not sure I like that. But I’ll reserve my judgements for the actual show when it airs.
If nothing else, showrunners T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson have expressed their enthusiasm with Banks’ talent, and feel confident in his ability to play Will for a new generation of fans.
“During the development of Bel-Air, the most daunting question was: Could we find a young actor who’d be able to step into the role of Will Smith? Well, did we ever find him. His name is Jabari Banks and he won our hearts in the same way he won this role. Our creative team, including Will Smith, recognized that Jabari embodied the talent, charisma, and sheer swagger necessary to make this iconic role his own,” said Brady and Newson.
Bel-Air arrives on Peacock in 2022.
