The USS Protostar will keep flying to new adventures! CBS and Nickelodeon just renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for a second season.

The animated kids series has aired just three episodes so far. Obviously, the fan response has been enough to greenlight the show for even more. Paramount+ reports that Star Trek: Prodigy proved the top-performing premiere in any original animated kids series on the platform.

The series follows a motley crew of young aliens who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar. As they take control of the ship, they must learn to work together to make their way to the Alpha Quadrant.

Prodigy is the first Star Trek series specifically aimed at younger audiences, but it’s not without tribute to older fans. The show sees Voyager star Kate Mulgrew reprise her role as Janeway (albeit in hologram form).

Additional voice cast for the series include Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner), and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok).

New episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy premiere weekly on Thursdays, exclusively on Paramount+. The series will take a midseason break after the November 18th episode. The second half of season one will then kick off January 6, 2022. Hopefully, with the series already landing a season 2 renewal, fans won’t have too long to wait between seasons.
