It appears that Taika Waititi is going to be a very busy boy indeed. Not only is he working on a Tower of Terror film and his very own Star Wars film, but now he’s working on a film adaptation of The Incal too.
Taika Waititi’s The Incal?
Deadline reports that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) has signed on to direct the feature-length film adaptation of The Incal graphic novel by Alejandro Jodorowsky, on behalf of Humanoids (or Les Humanoïdes Associés in the original French) and Primer Entertainment. That’s not all though. Apparently, Waititi will not only be the director, but also the co-writer for the script. Thus, this film, when it eventually launches, will have Waititi’s fingerprints all over it.
The Incal: Details
So what is The Incal about? Well, it’s an epic space opera story starring a not-very-good PI named John Difool, who finds himself accidentally going on a space adventure he really doesn’t want. Yeah, you can tell it’s a bit of a comedy based on his name. But it’s much more than just a comedy. Apparently, the graphic novel blends fantastical interstellar voyage, science, technology, political intrigues, conspiracies, messianism, mysticism, poetry, debauchery, love stories, and satire; all within this massive space opera starring a main character who really has no idea what he’s doing and is probably not the best choice to be a hero who’ll save the universe.
Yeah, you can tell this is going to be a pretty complex and strange story. With Taika Waititi directing it, it’s only going to get stranger. But if his last films are anything to go on, it’s going to be strange in a good way.
