After months of speculation and rumors, Rockstar Games has finally confirmed the existence of a Grand Theft Auto: Remastered Trilogy. In a tweet and press release they sent out earlier today, the three games that kicked off the series into the stratosphere were teased.
Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are all in the collection that releases later this year. The press release stated that all three games would receive :
Graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements […] while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals.” Quite what those enhancements will look like remains to be seen, but Rockstar says it’ll share more information “in the coming weeks.
All three games are coming to current gen consoles (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4/5, Switch, PC) later this year. If you’re in the market for the current versions of these games available on those consoles, act quick, because Rockstar is taking them off storefronts starting next week. The new remastered games are coming to iOS and Android later in 2022.
This is hugely exciting news. These games are all stone-cold classics of the genre. Grand Theft Auto III changed gaming forever. The following two games: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas changed the way stories are told in games. They played out more like movies than any other game up to that point. The biggest issue with going back and playing these games, especially after GTA4/5 is the modern gaming amenities. There’s no mid-mission saving. There’s no checkpoints. Among other things, these games could just use a bit of a facelift when it comes to graphics.
Either way, we’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.
