Amazon’s Wheel of Time series still hasn’t quite arrived, but we’re already hearing news of a significant shakeup. Apparently, a major role has been recast for season 2.
Amazon previously gave Wheel of Time an early renewal, so that production on the fantasy series could move ahead. Filming for season 2 is currently underway, with the first season set to premiere this November.
However, Deadline reports that season 2 filming will go on without Barney Harris. Harris joined the Wheel of Time cast for season 1 as Mat Cauthon. As a member of “Emond’s Field Five,” Mat Cauthon is part of the core group traveling with Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) on her quest. For season 2, Dónal Finn (The Witcher) will portray the character.
At this time, Amazon’s reason for the recasting remains unclear. However, since Mat Cauthon is a main character on the show, we can be sure the studio didn’t make this decision lightly. With the series set to hold a panel at New York Comic-Con in just a few weeks, perhaps we’ll get more answers then.
Until then, go ahead and rewatch the trailer for Wheel of Time again. (But don’t get too attached to Harris, I guess.)
Based on Robert Jordan’s best-selling fantasy novels, The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it. The series follows Moiraine (Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
The Wheel of Time premieres on Prime Video November 19. You can catch the NYCC panel for the show on October 8.
