Maybe avoid the new Malignant trailer if you want to sleep tonight…

The upcoming film from James Wan follows Madison (Annabelle Wallis), a woman paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders. But her torment only worsens when she realizes her waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

The trailer has a nice mix of scares, and a good creeping sense of dread to the whole thing. The first trailer had a heavier focus on Madison’s visions, whereas this one makes it more clear the terror will stretch beyond her to others.

Malignant comes from director and major horror vet Wan, aka the man behind franchises like The Conjuring and Insidious

“I wanted to do something that was a bit different, but harken back to my roots,” Wan said. “You gotta take chances. If you don’t, you end up making the same thing again and again. I think audiences are starved for something that’s new and different.”

In addition to Wallis in the lead role, the cast includes Maddie Hasson (Mr. Mercedes); George Young (Containment); Michole Briana White (Dead to Me); Jacqueline McKenzie (Reckoning); Jake Abel (Supernatural); and Ingrid Bisu (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun).

Malignant premieres in theaters September 10. And thanks to HBO Max’s day-and-date deal for 2021, you can also stream it on the platform the same day. (Provided you have the ad-free plan, anyways.)
