Elena Cañero-Reed may be president one day… But for now, she’s just trying to get through seventh grade.

In the second season of Diary of a Future President, Elena juggles school and the shifting dynamics of her family and friends. Check out the trailer for season 2 below:

Diary of a Future President features Tess Romero as 13-year-old Elena. Gina Rodriguez also stars as Elena’s future self and conscience, helping guide her through middle school on her journey to the White House. Rodriguez serves as an executive producer on the show as well.

Here’s the synopsis from Disney+:

Season two of Diary of a Future President continues the origin story of Cuban American and future leader Elena Cañero-Reed as she enters the seventh grade. Told using the narration of excerpts from Elena’s diary, this coming-of-age series and family comedy follows Elena through the ups and downs of middle school which set her on the path to becoming the president of the United States.

In addition to the trailer, Disney also released new key art for season 2. The image comes from multidisciplinary Latinx artist Katty Huertas, known for her work exploring identity and folklore.

Showrunner Ilana Peña (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) created Diary of a Future President loosely inspired by her own adolescence. The series has been lauded for its authentic portrayal of a Latinx family. 

In addition to Romero and Rodriguez as Elena, the show also stars Selenis Leyva as Elena’s mother Gabi; Charlie Bushnell as Elena’s brother Bobby; and Michael Weaver as Gabi’s boyfriend Sam.

Season 1 of Diary of a Future President is available to stream on Disney+ now. Season 2 arrives soon on Wednesday, August 18. All ten episodes will start streaming at the same time.
