It looks like Universal might be starting something with their classic monsters. No, it’s not Dracula, but Renfield. The unhinged assistant of Dracula is coming to the big screen and starring Nicholas Hoult. Chris McKay, director of The Tomorrow War is directing a story by Robert Kirkman with a script from Ryan Ridley.
Renfield debuted in Bram Stoker’s original novel, Dracula back in 1897 and appeared in the feature film debut of Dracula in 1931. Universal tried previously to kick start their “Monsters” or Dark Universe, but that failed. Movies like The Mummy were flops, but The invisible Man was a success of the early days of the pandemic. This might not be a try at Dracula, but it could be a sign of things to come. There’s plenty of stories and characters that are ripe for movies and TV from that series of films.
Renfield is not the main character but he’s one that’s quite interesting nonetheless. It remains to be seen whether or not Dracula makes an appearance in this film. The main trait for Renfield is an undying allegiance to the undead lord. The tone of this one could go all over the place. Is it a comedy? A horror film about the tragic turn for the assistant? Who knows at this point.
We’ll have to see when we get more details on the film and the surrounding world.
