Free Guy has gone on quite the journey to make it to theaters. It releases August 13th, 2021 and it’s a real treat for audiences. The film, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar is a joyous experience. The press junket for the film included all of the principle actors and the director. Here’s a bit we learned about the film from all of them.
Collective Joy Is The Overarching Theme
Through the whole conference, the one thread that brought everything together was joy. Whether that’s the joy of watching the movie and seeing it all unfold; or it’s the collective joy of seeing it and reacting in a crowd of people in a dark movie theater. Shawn Levy made specific reference to this when he was talking about the film. This is really one that’s supposed to be seen in a dark theater full of like-minded people.
All of the actors, including Lil Rel Howery made mention of how much fun the cast was to work with. It translates on screen and all of the people in the film look like they’re having a blast. Howery made special mention of how he felt like he and Ryan Reynolds were best friends on the set, and it helped out how their characters acted with one another.
A Sequel Is Working Around, And Titled After A Joke In Free Guy
Naturally, if Free Guy is a huge success, a sequel will come. That’s just how entertainment and movies work. It’s actually a big thread in the film about sequels to anything. Shawn Levy made mention that if a sequel is made, the title will have to be Free Guy 2: Albuquerque Boiled Turkey. It’s based on a joke in the film that you’ll have to see to fully understand.
So make sure you go out and see Free Guy!
Taika Waititi’s character, Antoine, is the antagonist of the film. He’s an evil owner of the game company that makes Free City. He ends up with some of the funniest lines and sequences in the whole film Somewhere out there, hopefully on a Blu-ray/DVD bonus feature, there’s a 35 minute highlight reel of Taika improvising lines. To take the title of funniest person in a movie away from Ryan Reynolds is impressive, but only someone like Waititi can do that.
Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” Wasn’t Originally In The Film
Right off the bat, the classic song “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey is on your mind watching Free Guy. The song is basically a theme of the movie at the end of it. But according to Ryan Reynolds, it almost wasn’t. Originally the song that unites the movie together was “Your Love” by The Outfield. A great song in it’s own right, but the Mariah Carey banger definitely filled the role better.
Jodie Comer even sings a cover of the song for the film. Speaking of her, she pulls double duty on the film, playing Millie and MolotovGirl. Her role required basically two separate performances that collide into one by the end of the film. She gave some great insight on how to act and perform a part like that. Her role is one that fleshes the movie out and adds to some of it’s best moments.
Free Guy releases in theaters on August 13th, 2021, and you’ll be missing out on a joyous and hilarious experience. Go out and see it!
