If you’re a Blu-ray collector or just a fan of 80’s horror, Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark is high up on the list of movies that need a new version. There was one release all the way back in 2009, with a HORRIBLE cover that was reminiscent of Twilight. Since then, the Blu-ray has gone out of print and fetches fairly high prices. If you were looking to stream the film, because of rights issues, it wasn’t available there either. To top it off, the picture quality and extras package for that lone release was sorely lacking.
Enter our friends at Bloody Disgusting and they did a bit of research into the matter. The Twitter account @GeekGabNews is reporting that the UK label Studiocanal is bringing Near Dark back to life.
Now that cover is almost assuredly a fan-made version, but the news is that Studiocanal is hard at work on a new release for this classic Vampire-Western film. They confirmed the news about Near Dark in a “blink and miss it” appearance in a trailer they put out earlier this year.
The section showing Near Dark is at 1:34 in the trailer. The film made the number one spot on our list of Top 10 Films That Bend Genres.
This isn’t an official announcement of a 4K release from Studiocanal however, so we’ll have to keep you updated on this story as it develops.
