Contrary to reports by from last week, Elijah Wood will not be playing the villain in the upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger. The film will instead have Kevin Bacon as its villain. THR is reporting that Bacon has signed on for the film. In addition to Bacon, Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige are also signed on for the film. Macon Blair will direct and write the film. It’s a reboot of the 1984 film from Troma Entertainment about an everyman who is pushed into a vat of toxic waste and becomes the crime-fighting Toxic Avenger. It starts filming this June in BUlgaria.
That original film brought forth elements and themes about environmental conservation and subverted tropes in the genre. It was a breath of fresh air during a less conscious time for horror. The Toxic Avenger was the biggest hit for Troma in their career and spawned a cartoon, and tons of sequels.
Following this, Peter Dinklage plays the hero and Bacon will play, according to THR, a “slick (and likely over the top) villain”. It’s not Bacon’s first foray into the comic-book film. He starred in X-Men: First Class and Super.
