Jean-Claude Van Damme is back! Netflix has just dropped the official trailer for their new action-packed French film The Last Mercenary written and directed by David Charhon and co-written by Ismaël Sy Savané. Van Damme has released a slew of mediocre low-budget action films in the last two decades. But, showed signs that he still has life left in him in the underrated JCVD and of course, the star-studded The Expendables 2. And now The Muscles from Brussels looks like he is ready to make a triumphant return under the Netflix banner, with The Last Mercenary. Here is what you can expect from the film:
Richard Brumère, aka “La Brume” (“The Mist”), a former French secret service special agent turned mercenary, is back in the saddle as the immunity he was granted 25 years earlier for his son Archibald is lifted. A mob operation threatens Archibald’s life. To save him, Richard will have to reach out to his oldcontacts, join forces with a bunch of reckless youngsters from the projects and an offbeat bureaucrat – but mostly find the courage to let Archibald know he’s his father.
The Last Mercenary stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou.

As a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s who has been mostly disappointed with his output of films in the last two decades or so, this looks like a lot of fun! Netflix has made their mark with mid-budget action films and this seems to be keeping with the trend. It’s also nice to see that the film doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously. But, what is up with Van Damme’s wigs? That alone is intriguing me enough to check this one out.
The Last Mercenary will be streaming exclusively on Netflix this July 30, 2021.
Do you think this will be a return to form for Van Damme?
