After all those rumors about an early Nintendo Direct, it’s nice to get some confirmation on this straight from the source.
Nintendo of America confirmed on multiple social media platforms, including Twitter, that Nintendo Direct 2021 will coincide with E3 2021. They have even helpfully provided a link to their livestream here. So no, Nintendo will not be trying to show up E3 with their own thing this year. Sorry, Nintendo fans. Maybe next year they can be a little bolder.
Nintendo Direct 2021: The Details
Specifically, Nintendo do their thing on June 15, 2021: on the last day of E3 2021. Nintendo Direct will start at 9:00 AM (PST)/12:00 PM (EST). Nintendo has stated that they will devote the event towards Nintendo Switch software for 2021. In fact, they’ll dedicate about 40 minutes towards Switch software. Note though that they specifically say “software”, not “hardware”. Unless they’re trolling us hard, they are definitely squashing any and all Nintendo Switch Pro rumors once and for all. Eh, oh well. I guess we’ll just have to wait for next year to see a 4k Nintendo console.
On the bright side though, Nintendo will follow up Nintendo Direct with a Nintendo Treehouse Live event. This event will last a grand total of 3 hours, so you might want to bring some popcorn while you’re watching. Those 3 hours will comprise entirely of gameplay footage from various upcoming Nintendo games, with Nintendo Treehouse staff and guests streaming the live gameplay and providing commentary. Which games, you might ask? Well, Nintendo is keeping that under wraps for now, but we can guess: Breath of the Wild 2. I don’t think we’re going to get 3 hours of Breath of the Wild 2 (although I wouldn’t mind), but I do hope that is one of the games that will stream here.
Conclusion
This year’s Nintendo Direct will take place during E3 2021, not before it. Specifically, Nintendo will have their spotlight on June 15, 2021; at 9:00 AM (PST)/12:00 PM (EST). The event will have 40 minutes dedicated to Nintendo Switch 2021 software (not hardware), followed by 3 hours of gameplay footage from upcoming games. Breath of the Wild 2, we’re waiting for you.
