Horror fans, get ready to subscribe to HBO Max. The sequel to Evil Dead, Evil Dead Rise from New Line Cinema is coming straight to HBO Max according to Variety. For people outside the US, it’s coming to Canal Plus in the UK and Metropolitan in France. While it would be awesome to have Raimi and Campbell in the director’s chair and starring, they’re acting as Executive Producers on the project. If you remember back to the fantastic reboot of Evil Dead by Fede Alvarez, Campbell and Raimi also produced that film.
This isn’t going to be another reboot however, it’s a full fledged sequel to the original trilogy of films. The action moves from the woods to the city. Two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, find themselves in the midst of the deadites. They have to battle for survival and keep their family together at the same time.
Director Lee Cronin was hand-picked by Raimi and Campbell to write and direct the film. Here’s what Raimi had to say about the film.
I’m thrilled to bring ‘Evil Dead’ back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.
The film starts production next month in New Zealand. There’s no confirmed release date at the moment. We’ll keep you updated on any news that comes out on the casting or production of the film.
