If you loved Disney’s Soul, you can now dive back into The Great Before. The new Pixar short 22 vs. Earth debuts today on Disney+.
Set before the events of Soul, 22 vs. Earth sees 22 defy the rules of The Great Before and refuse to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of five other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. However, as her cohorts’ activities lead to unexpected results, 22’s subversive plot may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.
You can watch a clip from 22 vs. Earth to get a feel for the short below.
Sometimes creating “prequel” content feels forced, like the creators were told they needed to create an in-universe story, but couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Luckily, this isn’t the case with 22 vs. Earth. The precursor to Soul not only makes sense, it feels like it really adds to 22’s character.
The short serves as the directorial debut for Kevin Nolting, who said he could relate to 22 more than any other character in Soul. You can see Nolting’s appreciation for 22, as this short really brings her personality and struggle to find meaning front and center.
22 vs. Earth will be a lot of fun for Soul fans, but honestly, it also works as a great introduction to the world if you haven’t seen the animated feature. The animation of The Great Before is beautiful, and Tina Fey brings plenty of humor to the voice of 22.
And of course, 22’s co-conspirators in her anti-Earth plot are absolutely adorable. The more sweet and childlike they act, the funnier 22’s rebellion gets. APOCALYPSE gang, indeed!
So watch 22 vs. Earth to get a little inspired (or maybe even discover the meaning of life). You can stream the short as well as Pixar’s feature Soul on Disney+ now.
