[Warning: article contains minor spoilers for Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse No. 2. Read on at your own risk.] This is definitely not your same old Firefly... Or is it? New characters mingle with old, morals and ideals are tested, and Blue Sun remains an omnipresent threat. As much as things change, they do indeed stay the same for Zoe Washburn and Serenity. Things heat up after the events of IssueNo. 1 when a salvage job turned into a rescue. Despite shades of the original series and its adventures with River Tam, the new comic from BOOM! Studios twists the old tale into a whole new story. A slow start definitely picks up heat in Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse No. 2.
Picking up right where Issue No 1. left off, Issue 2 has the team struggling with the revelation that their “salvage” is a living, breathing human being. Blue Sun is close behind, leaving Zoe and company to once again improvise as in days of old. We’ll hold on the details of Brand New ‘Verse No. 2and let you experience it for yourself, but suffice it to say sometimes it doesn’t hurt to ask for a little help.
Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse No. 2 gets familiar
Zoe and her daughter Emma are in for a world of hurt! With the Blue Sun on their tail, they turn to the only people they can trust – Kaylee and Simon. But what happened to Mal… and what does it mean for the new crew of Serenity?
~ BOOM! Studios official synopsis
Finally! We get to see our favorite odd couple of Kaylee and Simon, and boy are you going to be surprised. Let’s be honest, anything with Kaylee is bound to put a smile on your face. Boom! smartly understands the value of nostalgia mixed with new storytelling in that regard. Brand New ‘Verse No. 2 weaves the old and the new together in a way that, thankfully, doesn’t feel forced. There’s even a very heartwarming tribute to our beloved leaf on the wind, Wash. But what will the these connections to the past mean for Zoe, Emma, and Serenity’s future?
The story certainly picks up in Issue No. 2, but it’s still hard to get invested in the new crew beyond Emma. It is only the second issue, granted, so here’s hoping we get to know them better as the series moves forward!
