Godzilla: Dominion Review
The Plot
Godzilla: Dominion gives us a story that many fans have been asking for, and that is a story without any human characters. Yes, I know Godzilla does not talk. The story seen through the eyes of the King of the Monsters is told to us by a narrator who takes us through the adventures and battles that Godzilla endures.
Still tired and looking for a new place to call home after his was destroyed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Not only is he trying to get some rest as the newly crowned King of Titans, but Godzilla also spends time trying to keep the other monsters in check so we don’t have a repeat of all the past destruction earth just went through. So as the story goes we see Godzilla looking for that new place to call home and fighting battle after battle in doing so.
The Creative Team
Author Greg Keyes does an amazing job of telling us this story through the perspective of Godzilla. The story even without the human touch stays interesting as we are introduced to Godzilla’s Habits, hurdles, and new Titans. Illustrators Drew Edward Johnson (art), Allen Passalaqua (color), and Jimmy Betancourt (lettering) give us beautiful and stunning monster artwork that any fan of the MonsterVerse would love. The colors throughout the book not only set the mood for each panel they also add to the amazing details. Not only did the monsters look amazing the battles and environments did as well.
Kingdom Kong Review
The Plot
Kingdom Kong takes us back to Skull Island. Scientists have been not only learning more about the island but watching Kong as well. This novel also shows us what Skull Island has been like since they discovered it toward the end of the Vietnam War. Monarch scientist Houston Brooks on a mission to learn more about hollow earth brings some highly trained pilots to Skull Island to fly and maneuver through Hollow earth. Here is where we are introduced to Audrey, who has experience in fighting titans but is batting with PTSD that could pose a problem in this new mission. Well, as a team starts drilling to open the entrance to hollow earth they are met with a new Titan. This Titan has only one thing on its mind and that is to beat Kong.
The Creative Team
Author Marie Anello does a great job in not only telling the story about Kong but what has been going on at Skull Island in the past and up until the storm that has taken over the island that we see in Godzilla VS Kong. Anello also does a great job in leading this story up to the new movie as well. He also added a “small” cameo at the end of the story. Zid (art), Arthur Adams (cover), and Jimmy Betancourt (lettering) do a great job in setting the mood of the story. With the panels changing how they flow from page to page to the text placed where it does not distract from the art this story is very easy and exciting to follow as the story goes.
My Final Thoughts Of The Godzilla Dominion and Kingdom Kong Books
Where to start? Both Godzilla Dominion and Kingdom Kong were great to read. While the storylines were quite opposite from each other, they both did a good job to help set up the epic showdown between Godzilla and Kong. Each story had amazing art and just was fun to read. Godzilla could have used a little human touch in the story but I do like how Greg Keyes told the story through the eyes of Godzilla.
Kingdom Kong was great in keeping us informed on what was happening over the years on Skull Island. But they really did miss an opportunity on giving us more about Dr. Ilene Andrews and Jia. Also as a veteran, that deals with PTSD myself, I like how Marie Anello shows what it is like to deal with that mental monster and how it can affect your everyday life. Both books are a must-read in my opinion and retailing at $16.99 the price is right as well. On a scale of 1 to 5 Hashtags, I give Godzilla Dominion 4 Hashtags and Kingdom Kong 4.5 Hashtags.
