It’s been over a decade since the National Treasure films took audiences on a historical heist/adventure. But now fans really have something to get excited about: Disney+ just greenlit a National Treasure series.
Disney gave the TV show a 10-episode order. As part of updating the premise, the National Treasure TV series will explore the timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship, and patriotism. Picking up the torch from Benjamin Gates (Nicholas Cage’s character in the films) will be Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old DREAMer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure.
The series comes from the films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. Mira Nair (Vanity Fair) will direct the episodes.
The National Treasure TV series will serve as a “reimagining” of the franchise. A third film is supposedly still in the works. The movie added Chris Bremner as a writer in January 2020.
In a 2020 interview with Collider, Bruckheimer revealed the franchise planned to develop both a National Treasure series and a third film with the original cast as separate projects.
“We’re certainly working on one for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast,” Bruckheimer told Collider.
Neither the upcoming TV series nor the film in development have set release dates.
