A debut fit for a king. Over the weekend Amazon premiered the sequel to Coming to America, and it proved a huge hit for the platform.

Coming 2 America is reportedly the #1 streamed movie of the weekend. (For those paying attention, that means it beat out the Disney+ premiere of Raya and the Last Dragon.) According to Screen Engine/ASI’s weekly VOD rankings, Coming 2 America actually had the biggest opening weekend of any streaming movie in the last 12 months.

And people didn’t just watch the movie – they talked about it too. Coming 2 America has over 12,000 reviews on Prime Video. Plus, they average 4 out of 5 stars at the time of publishing. Pretty solid! ListenFirst Media reports it as the “most talked about” 2021 release so far, trending nationally on Twitter.

“For the past 33 years, the original 1988 film has been regarded as one of the most iconic films in the Black community. We wanted fans of Eddie Murphy and the original blockbuster to be surprised and delighted with every experience because we were passionate fans too!” said Ukonwa Ojo, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Amazon Prime.

And if the film’s theme “I’m A King” from Bobby Sessions and Megan Thee Stallion made you want to dance, you’re not alone. With the help of choreographer Fatima Robinson, it became a TikTok dance challenge. Tons of celebs talked about the movie on social media too, including Regina King, LeBron James, Snoop Dogg, Kerry Washington, Gladys Knight, and more. Dionne Warwick even hosted a watch party on Twitter.

In Coming 2 America, fans head back to Zamunda. The newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.

You’ll also spot returning cast members James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos, and Louie Anderson.
