Do we make our fortunes? Or do our fortunes make us?
It’s just one of many cryptic questions posed by the new Starz mini-series The Luminaries. The 19th century tale of love and vengeance is set in New Zealand during the famous gold rush era.
Check out the trailer for the series below.
The Luminaries is based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel by Eleanor Catton. Catton also serves as the series creator/showrunner. (So at the very least, novel fans should expect a faithful adaptation.)
The core cast includes Eve Hewson (Behind Her Eyes), Himesh Patel (Tenet), and Eva Green (Penny Dreadful). The show will air as a six-episode limited series.
Here’s the official series description from Starz:
The Luminaries follows defiant young adventurer Anna Wetherell (Hewson), who has sailed from Britain to New Zealand to begin a new life. There she meets the radiant Emery Staines (Patel), an encounter that triggers a strange kind of magic that neither can explain. As they fall in love, driven together and apart by fateful coincidence, these star-crossed lovers begin to wonder: do we make our fortunes, or do our fortunes make us?
The Luminaries premieres February 14 on Starz, following Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham.
