We know you watched The Mandalorian.
But did you watch it legally?
A whole bunch of people didn’t, apparently. According to TorrentFreak, The Mandalorian was the most pirated TV series of 2020.
And season two of the series found even more fans than its first season. (Or at least, more fans downloading torrents.) Last year, the Disney+ series landed at #3 on the most pirated list.
In 2019, The Mandalorian was outranked by HBO’s Game of Thrones, which held the #1 most pirated spot for seven years running. Since GOT aired its series finale in 2019, that opened up the spot for a new contender. It looks like Star Wars will fill that torrent gap.
Other top pirated shows of 2020 include Amazon’s The Boys at #2 and HBO’s Westworld at #3. You can view the top 10 list (and comparative 2019 rankings) below.
The Most Pirated Shows of 2020
- The Mandalorian (2019 rank: 3)
- The Boys (2019 rank: NA)
- Westworld (2019 rank: NA)
- Vikings (2019 rank: 4)
- Star Trek: Picard (2019 rank: NA)
- Rick and Morty (2019 rank: 8)
- The Walking Dead (2019 rank: 6)
- The Outsider (2019 rank: NA)
- Arrow (2019 rank: 10)
- The Flash (2019 rank: 7)
From this list, it’s clear to see genre content is the most heavily pirated. The majority of the list is made up of sci-fi series.
We can also see how the streaming wars may drive people to pirate content. Just look at how many different services you need to watch all of these shows. You have to subscribe to Disney+, Amazon Prime, HBO, and CBS All Access, plus have a cable or live-streaming package that includes History channel, Cartoon Network, AMC, and the CW.
Will we see The Mandalorian top the most pirated list again in the coming years? Or will the influx of new Star Wars and Marvel shows headed to Disney+ convince people to spring for a subscription? Only time will tell.
So, what do you think about 2020’s most pirated shows? Let us know in the comments.
