Chris Evans will star as Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s science fiction adventure film Lightyear, coming in July 17th 2022.
The Announcement
At the Disney investor’s call today Pixar studio executive Pete Docter took to the floor to announce upcoming Pixar projects. After listing numerous shows and films Docter concluded the presentation by announcing a Pixar first. An animated science fiction adventure film based on the character Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise. After showing some promotional early images and test footage he concluded with the release date of July 17th 2022.
‘Lightyear’ Details
Angus MacLane, who co-directed Finding Dory, will write and direct Lightyear. Chris Evans will provide the voice for Buzz Lightyear. No other characters or actors have been announced at this time. The film will not be about Buzz Lightyear the toy but rather be the film that the Buzz Lightyear toy was created for within the Toy Story universe. The plot is an origin story that will follow Buzz’s journey from a humble test pilot to an intergalactic hero.
‘Lightyear’ Expectations
Disney and Pixar have toyed with content featuring Buzz Lightyear before. Recognizing the character’s potential for legitimately exciting science fiction action adventure stories. First with the opening scene of Toy Story 2, which was eventually revealed to be a video game being played by Rex. Then again with the animated series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command which ran from October 2000 to January 2001. 19 years is plenty of times to give the concept another time and Chris Evans is the perfect actor to bring Buzz to life. This film will also be very welcome as animated science fiction is not as common in western animation as fantasy is.
