You’ve probably heard many times that Pat Patterson was the first ever Intercontinental Champion in WWE. You hear that so often, because he was the shining example of what that championship means to people. In addition to the IC championship, he’s done many things backstage for WWE. The Royal Rumble? That was Pat’s idea. He was many things in WWE, including a superstar, a commentator, a backstage agent, and he was also the first openly gay superstar in the company.
That last bit might be where Pat Patterson’s legacy shines the brightest. He was a trailblazer for everyone after him who was proud to be who they are. By all accounts, Patterson was universally loved backstage and around the company. His induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996 was a culmination of a career that would continue past that up to this day. He was a family member to all in WWE and was Vince McMahon’s right-hand man for many years.

No words can describe what he gave to us. His body as an in-ring performer, his mind as a storyteller, and his spirit as a beloved member of our large WWE family. I will miss him for so many reasons … it’s never goodbye, it’s see ya down the road. Love you, Pat.

I’m deeply grateful to have grown up with WWE Hall of Famer, the first-ever Intercontinental Champion, the father of the #RoyalRumble and the first openly gay wrestler of his generation. Thank you for teaching me how to not take it all so seriously.
Stephanie McMahon
If you’ve watched wrestling and enjoyed any of his work, take some time to remember Pat Patterson. Wrestling would be very different today, without him.
