One of the greatest cult classics in the science fiction world comes from the early 80s. A short lived television show that copied the Success of Star Wars while creating its own unique universe. Battlestar Galactica may have only lasted for a single season, but its impression lasts to this day. The late 2000’s saw a reimagining of the series that quickly became a benchmark for science fiction and one of the all time great shows of all time. Rumors float around of a new series or movie, but little has come of it – til now. THR reports Simon Kinberg will write and produce a Battlestar Galactica movie.

The fame and popularity of Battlestar Galactica soared in the late 2000’s with the dark, gritty, retelling of the 80s series. The last ship of the colonial fleet flees its destroyed home world with Cylons hot on their tail. Using Greek mythology as a base, the Galactica searches for the lost 13th colony – Earth. The remake reinvented much of the show’s original lore, but did so in remarkable ways.

A movie has long been rumored, but how does one turn a television series with such depth into a quality movie? Movies can do big and flashy, but when the show revolves around its depth and development of character, it will be tricky. Simon Kinberg thinks he knows how. After being announced as the writer and producer of the Battlestar movie he had the following to say:

Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” said Kinberg in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.

Kinberg sports quite the resume. While his last outing X-Men: Dark Phoenix did not fair so well, his previous movies display some impressive titles. He either wrote or produced such hits as multiple X-Men movies, Deadpool, The Martian, Cinderella, and Mr & Mrs Smith. The range of his movies suggest a good fit for the Battlestar Galactica franchise. Even if he begins now to write the movie and pull it together, a director is still needed and the earliest it could be released with smooth sailing might be 2025 (at the soonest!).

Cylons evolved

Another interesting development will be how this movie is cast. Fans knew the characters by certain races and sexes. The 2000 reboot changed many of the sexes and races of the characters, so in effect any character could show up as any race or sex. Starbuck started as actor Dirk Benedict, but was changed to Katee Sackoff in the reboot. Could Starbuck return to male form and have best friend Apollo now be female? Could Admiral Adama now be female? Anything could go and suggest the direction the movie will travel. Will the Cylons maintain their all metal forms from the original, or be the human trojans of the reboot?

The pressure will be on to create a hit that stays both faithful to the original while bringing something new and amazing. Stay tuned to Thathashtagshow.com for more details.
