Earlier last week, in the midst of a flurry of rumors and confirmations about Spider-Man 3, a report dropped about former Spider-Men. The report that stated that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were set to reprise their roles as Spider-Man in the upcoming film. While that idea sounded awesome on face-value, it’s turned out to be false. According to ET Canada, Sony said this.
Those rumored castings are not confirmed.
Sony Pictures Statement
Now that’s not a strong denial of the rumors. Normally Sony and any other film studio like Marvel, do not comment on such things. This is an outright denial of the casting of those two actors. The film already has Jamie Foxx and Benedict Cumberbatch on board. Foxx is reprising his role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Cumberbatch is coming on as a mentor for Peter Parker in the film.
Remember the issues with Spider-Man 3 and it’s rogues gallery of villains? Imagine that with too many versions of Peter Parker slinging around. Even if they were for just a small cameo as part of a multiverse, it would be distracting. I would love to see the two of them back, perhaps in a Spider-Verse sequel, but not this time.
What do you think about this Sony refutation? Are you still excited for Spider-Man 3? Do you think that three Spider-Men would be too distracting for the film?
