Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow was the most iconic character of the entire Pirate of the Caribbean film series. In fact, I wouldn’t be all that off in saying that he’s the sole reason why the series was so popular. Too bad those Disney suits didn’t see it that way during the filming of the original movie.

Jack Sparrow perturbed.
What? It’s not my fault they didn’t get me.

According to a recent interview with Euronews that originally had nothing to do at all with Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp revealed something about his first experiences with playing Captain Jack Sparrow for that first movie: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Specifically, he mentioned that Disney was “scared to death” when he first started doing that weird…whatever it was Jack Sparrow liked to do. You know, that stagger and slurred speech? Like he had a bottle of rum in his hands at all times?

According to Johnny Depp: “They were nervous, they were afraid no one would understand a word Captain Jack said. I got calls from them asking, ‘Is he drunk? Are you drunk? What’s the thing with his hands?'”

When There Was Almost No Cap. Jack Sparrow

Jack Sparrow outraged.
Whazzat?! You can’t do that!

Fortunately, Johnny Depp saved the entire Pirates of the Caribbean film series by simply not giving a damn. He mentions in that same interview: “I wasn’t discouraged in the slightest, it fuels me. I know that if they’re worried, I’m doing my job. When they asked me to bring it down, I turned it up.”

I mean, seriously, can you imagine Pirates of the Caribbean without Cap. Jack Sparrow? I mean, it’d just be another pirate movie. Sure, Will Turner is a solid hero, but he’s so…straight-laced. Honest. Bland, really. Without Jack Sparrow, there’d be no one for Will Tuner to play off of. None of that straight man and…whatever Jack Sparrow is dynamic they had in the movies. It’d be like Laurel and Hardy without Laurel. The Three Stooges with only one Stooge. The duo just would not be complete with Cap. Jack Sparrow, and we can all thank Johnny Depp that he made it into the movie, and sailed onwards to his destiny.

Conclusion

Johnny Depp was singlehandedly responsible for Cap. Jack Sparrow acting the way he did in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Even in the face of criticism from unknowing and uncaring Disney executives, he sailed onwards to triumph. So huzzah to Johnny Depp, and let’s all drink a pint of rum in his honor!

Jack Sparrow satisfied.
Cap. Jack Sparrow approves!

So, what do you think about this revelation from Johnny Depp?

Pass the bottle, please!
