Warner Bros. and filmmaker George Miller just dropped some Mad Max news.
The Fury Road spinoff Furiosa just cast Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Technically, the project hasn’t yet received the green light from the studio. However, the casting news does seem to put the film back on track.
Mad Max: Fury Road released back in 2015. While it ultimately lost the Best Picture Oscar to Spotlight, the film still took home six Academy Awards. The movie proved wildly popular, with special attention drawn to Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa.
Director Miller said he wanted to return to Mad Max’s post-apocalyptic world and especially to the character of Furiosa. He will direct, co-write, and produce the Furiosa spinoff.
Taylor-Joy will play Furiosa in her “genesis” story. At this time, it’s unclear what roles Hemsworth and Abdul-Mateen II will play.
The Mad Max franchise first launched in 1979. The stories are “set in a dystopian society where life is cheap, the vehicles ramshackle, the strong rule the weak, and justice, if it exists, is in your own hands.”
After a trio of films in the 80’s starring Mel Gibson, Mad Max returned with Tom Hardy as the frontman.
Currently, an exact timeline for the project is unknown.
So, what do you think about this casting update? Are you excited for Anya Taylor-Joy to become Furiosa? Or are you already missing Charlize Theron? Let us know in the comments.
