Coming 2 America is the sequel to the hit Eddie Murphy film from 1988, Coming To America. The film was originally produced and going to be released by Paramount pictures. Now, Variety is reporting that Amazon has acquired the film from Paramount. The sale is worth approximately $125 million.
It’s a push from Amazon recently to get more commercial original films on it’s platform. Most recently, they’re putting out the sequel to Borat on Amazon. With movie theater closures still on, people need entertainment to fill that void. Coming 2 America is another in that line of movies for the streaming platform.
The original film was directed by John Landis. It starred Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Both actors are returning with Craig Brewer stepping into the directors chair for the sequel.
The sequel’s plot is a continuation of the first film. Prince Akeem is set to become King of the fictional country of Zamunda. He finds out about a son in Queens, Lavelle. Akeem (Murphy) and Semmi (Hall) return to America to groom the young man into another Prince. New to the cast for the sequel are Tracy Morgan and Jay Pharaoh.
The film releases on Amazon Prime on December 18th.
So what do you think of the sequel, Coming 2 America?
