Well this is a welcome surprise. After it was revealed last week that Jamie Foxx’s Electro would be returning, we thought the Spider-Man 3 news was done. Now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch is joining the film as a mentor to Peter Parker. This might also explain how Electro is coming to the film.
The upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is just that. It’s setting up a multiverse for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film, being directed by Sam Raimi, could link up the previous “Marvel” films from Fox and Sony into this current MCU that we know. Both films are set to start filming soon or in 2021, with the Doctor Strange film coming first. The previous two Spider-Man films in the MCU had mentor characters for Peter to bounce off of. The first film had Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. While, Far From Home had Samuel L. Jackson as the mentor for Peter. This third film is shaping up to have Doctor Strange be that.
It seems like it’s part of a conscious effort by Marvel to have Strange assume the “leader” role that Tony Stark held for so long. The original cast of the first two Spider-Man films are all set to return as well. We’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.
So, what do you think of Benedict Cumberbatch showing up in Spider-Man 3?
