A new generation of Pretty Little Liars is coming to HBO Max.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin takes place 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago…as well as their own.
The new series comes from Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Like Aguirre-Sacasa’s other shows, it sounds like this version of PLL will rely on dark, horror-tinged drama.
Lindsay Calhoon Bring, who wrote for Sabrina, joins Aguirre-Sacasa as co-executive producer. They released a joint statement about the upcoming Pretty Little Liars series.
“We’re such huge fans of what I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as #CANON and do something different. So we’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements.”
So yeah. Basically, it sounds like we’re getting Pretty Little Liars with a dark Sabrina filter.
Sarah Aubrey, head of HBO Max original content, also praised the showrunners and upcoming project.
“Roberto and Lindsay are expanding the Pretty Little Liars universe with more murder, mysteries, and scandal, and we can’t wait,” said Aubrey.
The original Pretty Little Liars became a pop culture phenomenon during its seven year run on Freeform/ABC Family. The show remains the #1 series to ever air on the network.
The series was based on the bestselling book series by Sara Shepard.
