HBOMax begins its trek into original, streaming superhero content with the announcement of a Peacemaker series. While Peacemaker might be a vague DC character right now, his persona will be known very soon with the release of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. Not only will HBOMax borrow Peacemaker from Gunn’s film, but James Gunn himself took creative control of the series. Gunn will oversee both writing duties as well as some directing duties. If fans needed more, none other than John Cena will reprise the role from the Suicide Squad movie.
Promoters already began molding the character to fit their purposes. Peacemaker looks slightly different in the comics. If you notice above, the comic head already boasts the jaw and features of John Cena. For WWE fans, you know they will promote the hell out of this since John Cena stars in it. Apparently this show favors more adult audiences as the slogan introducing the character comes down to: “F**K, It’s Peacemaker.”
Peacemaker Series – Sound A Bit Cheesy?
For many this announcement makes eyes roll back into their heads. John Cena starring in a show as a character named Peacemaker? It sounds a little to 80s-esque when Hulk Hogan tried to body slam Hollywood. John Cena achieved what Hogan could not. He appeared in several movies both as a star and supporting actor. His range may not be very broad, but like many other wrestlers (Batista) if you build roles around them and cater to their strengths while not asking too much out of them, they do quite well. This role sounds perfect for Cena, especially since patriotic, strong-jawed characters are his forte. Cena had the following to say:
“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Not only should Cena fit the part, but James Gunn will stay along side to kick the project off. The new Suicide Squad has been his baby for some time, and after what Gunn did with Guardians of the Galaxy, group films seem to be his wheelhouse. Gunn added the following:
“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
James Gunn
Gunn still needs to wrap up the Suicide Squad movie and Guradians of the Galaxy 3, so do not expect this show any earlier than 2022.
Peacemaker Series – Who is the Peacemaker?
So who is Peacemaker? Well, he believes pacifism. Most people hate wars, so what? Peacemaker believes so strongly in pacifism that he will kill anyone who attempts to stand in his way. The ends justify the means and so does the body count. Starting to sound a bit more Suicide Squady? The show looks to explore the roots of Peacemaker’s origins and how his contrary nature came to be.
If the supporting cast around Cena does a good job, this could be quite the show for HBOMax. Gunn proved his mettle many times over, so when this show finally drops it could be everything John Cena ever wished for.
