Solo‘s star actor, Alden Ehrenreich, takes an opportunity to praise Solo‘s good points. He also take a shot at journalism and criticized the media for their, well, criticism of it.
Alden Ehrenreich, in a recent interview with Total Film and brought to us by Gamesradar, called the whole experience of filming Solo: A Star Wars Story an “amazing adventure”. He mentions that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see how large companies make high-budget blockbuster movies. It apparently “demystifies something that is very mystified”.
Ehrenreich then goes on to talk about how the media might’ve been responsible for why Solo: A Star Wars Story got such bad press. Solo isn’t a great movie, but it’s not as bad as some make it out to be. It’s actually a pretty good movie. Unfortunately, “pretty good” doesn’t make headlines. According to Ehrenreich, the media at the higher levels feels an intense pressure to either “catastrophise or celebrate” things they report on. This resulted in Solo getting a lot of bad press early on, and probably resulted in its poor performance in the box office.
Solo: A Star Wars Undeserved Flop?
Solo made about $400 million worldwide, which while respectable for the average movie, is a flop for a Star Wars movie. It’s actually the lowest grossing money in the entire Star Wars series. Disney actually lost money making Solo, which might be why it’s got such a bad rep.
Speaking as someone who has watched Solo: A Star Wars Story though, I’d like to restate that it isn’t a bad movie. It’s nowhere near Rogue One or The Mandalorian, but it’s not a bad movie. Speaking as my personal opinion, Ehrenreich may have a point about the movie. Again, while it’s not great, it really doesn’t deserve the bad reviews it got.
Conclusion
Alden Ehrenreich speaks out against media sensationalism in defense of Solo: A Star Wars Story. In all honesty, I think it’s a decently good movie that doesn’t deserve the flak it’s getting from some critics. But you don’t have to listen to me. Just head on over to Disney+, watch it, and decide for yourself.
