“Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again…”

So begins Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel Rebecca. But fans of the novel won’t have to dream of Manderley for much longer. Netflix will take us there October 21.

Check out the trailer for Rebecca starring Lily James and Armie Hammer below.

Rebecca tells the story of a young woman (James) newly married to a handsome widower (Hammer). She tries to settle into her new life at the Manderley estate, but finds her every action scrutinized by the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas). And even worse, she’s haunted by the shadow of her husband’s first wife, Rebecca.

The trailer reveals our first look at the romance between Hammer’s Maxim de Winter and his new wife. Their sweet, sunny courtship quickly turns creepy when the new Mrs. de Winter arrives at Manderley. And Mrs. Danvers isn’t exactly providing a warm welcome.

Du Maurier’s novel was previously adapted for film – and it was a big one, so Netflix has some serious shoes to fill. The 1940 edition of Rebecca came from visionary horror director Alfred Hitchcock. It won an Oscar for Best Picture and became Hitchcock’s first Best Director nomination.

So, will you head to Manderley on October 21? Or will the success of the previous film prove too much to overcome – much like Rebecca’s shadow over Mrs. de Winter?
