Actress Letitia Wright as the MCU’s Shuri

After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman last Friday; a new rumor has already surfaced that Disney is re-evaluating their plans for Black Panther 2.

Boseman’s death caught nearly everyone off guard. Even Disney co-stars such a director Ryan Coogler admitted he had no clue Boseman was battling cancer while filming Black Panther.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, even people as high as Kevin Feige himself did not know of Boseman’s condition until hours before his death. Boseman was adamant in his belief that would be able to beat his cancer and be ready to film Black Panther 2 next year.

However, it is unlikely that everyone at Disney was out of the loop. Several months ago rumors began to circulate that there were plans to replace Boseman’s Black Panther with his sister Shuri.

The Initial Shuri Rumors

The initial rumors that started as far back as January of this year, but persistent all the way until May. According to the rumors, plans were being made to replace Boseman with Shuri actress Letitia Wright in the Black Panther sequel. As a way to add more diversity to the MCU and build towards an all-female A-Force movie.

At the time fans scoffed at such an idea. Noting that Disney would never replace such a beloved and high profile actor. However, now that the truth has come out about Boseman’s condition. It seems likely that behind the scenes Marvel was considering options if the worst should happen.

Sadly the worst has now happened. Many fans believe that replacing Boseman is simply not an option. Believing that it would be disrespectful of the actor’s memory. Having T’Challa die in-universe, and having the mantle be taken up by his younger sister, feels like the only respectable way to continue the Black Panther story.

So, what do you think of this rumor?
