Yoda just got a new makeover! Sort of. It’s apparently his new look for Star Wars: The High Republic, but you’d never realize that he’d changed at all.
Yoda’s New/Old Look?
Disney has just released new concept art for Yoda for their new The High Republic series. This spin-off of Star Wars is supposed to take place 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, so Yoda is consequentially younger. Specifically, he’s 700 years old in this new series instead of the 900 he is in the films. So you’d think he’d look a bit younger in The High Republic, right? Well, not so much.
As you can see, Yoda doesn’t appear to have changed much. The only significant difference I can make out is that Yoda is bald, as opposed to the wisps of white hair he has in the films. Does that mean 200 years ago, he shaved his head? Was he the Mace Windu of his era 200 years before the real Mace thought shaving his head was cool? If shaving one’s head is a fashion statement, does that mean the Yoda of 200 years ago was more vain than he is now? That would be rather odd to see, I think.
I guess it makes some sense seeing as how Yoda is still fairly old in The High Republic. He’s more middle-aged at 700 years old, but he’s still fairly elderly and experienced. I would expect subtle changes in his personality, but perhaps the changes to his look need not be as subtle? After all, the fashion of 200 years ago in our world was drastically different than the fashion of today. Perhaps Yoda could wear radically different clothes than he does now as a nod to that?
Conclusion
The Yoda of 200 years ago during The High Republic looks more or less the same as he does now, save for his hair. Or rather, his lack thereof. Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Yoda in his hippy phase. It could be interesting.
At the very least, it’d be a breath of fresh air for Star Wars. Or at least, a new Yoda who’s not the chibi version.
