Move over Sherlock. There’s a new Holmes in town.
Sherlock and Mycroft’s younger sister Enola is ready to solve mysteries in her own right in the upcoming Netflix film Enola Holmes.
The film stars Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as the title character. The story follows Brown’s Enola as she wakes up one morning to find her mother missing. In the wake of this disappearance, her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft arrive, sending her off to finishing school. But Enola doesn’t want to learn etiquette and embroidery. She wants to find out what happened to her mother.
Watch Enola set off on her epic sleuthing journey in the trailer below.
Enola Holmes draws its inspiration from Nancy Springer’s detective novels. Springer’s stories focus on Enola’s love for mysteries and her refusal to conform to the standards set for women in 1800s Britain.
“I love the fact that she can be very vulnerable, yet even in her deepest despair she’s able to find herself again and fight back,” Brown said about her character. “I admire her courage and her strength. She goes to pretty dark places but she never gives up.”
In addition to Brown, several well-known actors round out the cast. Helena Bonham Carter plays Enola’s missing mother. Henry Cavill appears as Sherlock Holmes and Sam Claflin also stars as his brother Mycroft.
Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag) directed the film, with BAFTA winner Jack Thorne adapting the screenplay. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. produced it.
Enola Holmes was originally going to have a theatrical release. Amid COVID-19 theater closures and uncertainty, Legendary and Warner opted to allow Netflix to acquire the streaming rights instead.
Enola Holmes hits Netflix September 23.
