Netflix dropped a trailer for i’m thinking of ending things, and it looks like this one is going to hit us hard.

The drama (but also maybe thriller? horror?) film comes from Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman famously penned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. While not related, this new film definitely seems to deal with similar themes.

i’m thinking of ending things follows a young woman (Jessie Buckley) having second thoughts about her relationship. Despite this, she takes a roadtrip with her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents. Trapped in their farmhouse during a snowstorm, she begins to question the nature of everything she knew or understood about her boyfriend, herself, and the world.

Kaufman wrote and directed the film inspired by Iain Reid’s bestselling novel. Fans of Kaufman’s previous work will instantly see this won’t be a typical relationship story. From the trailer it’s clear everything isn’t what it seems in the household. But how much is Kaufman really going to mess with us?

The Oscar winner said i’m thinking of ending things continues his exploration of the subjective experience. In other words, things are going to get at least a little twisty. But Kaufman said he doesn’t set out to confuse people with the movie.

“I don’t set out to do a mindf—,” Kaufman told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m not setting out to do something that ‘tops’ some sort of brainteaser I might have done before. But there’s no question that I’m trying to build on the stuff that I’ve already done.”
