When you wish upon a star, you just might get Tom Hanks! According to Deadline, Tom Hanks has entered early talks to play Geppetto in the live action remake of Pinocchio.
Zemeckis and Hanks Reunion
Pinocchio will be directed by Robert Zemeckis from a script written by Zemeckis and producer Chris Weitz. Mr. Hanks would be reuniting with Zemeckis for a fourth time if he officially signs on. They previously collaborated on three classic films: Cast Away, Forrest Gump, and The Polar Express.
Deadline is reporting that Disney approached Mr. Hanks to play the role many years ago, but he declined. Recently, Hanks got a hold of the script and loved it. He reached out to Zemeckis to show his interest in the part, and has now entered early negotiations.
Mr. Hanks declined the role many years ago when a different creative team was attached. The previous team included director Paul King, known for his work on the Paddington films. Deadline speculates that although there is a new script, it is more likely that Mr. Hanks returned to the role because of his working relationship with Zemeckis.
Disney has not announced any other casting news at this point. Recruiting talent to a project is never a mistake, and Tom Hanks is certainly talent. Given the recent news of the Mulan remake moving to Disney+, it is unclear if the Pinocchio remake will be theatrically released or not. However, with them recruiting high caliber actors like Tom Hanks it is likely this will be a theatrical film.
What do you think of Tom Hanks potentially playing Geppetto? Are you excited about the upcoming Pinocchio film?
