Mulan
Not coming out March 27th anymore.

In a reversal that basically states that Disney is waving the white flag on theaters in the US for the time being, Mulan is coming to Disney+. In markets without Disney+ or that have theaters open, the film will be releasing there.

There’s a huge catch with this though. On top of the $8 you’re paying for Disney+ a month, to watch Mulan, it’ll cost $30. That’s way above the current price point for other movies coming to VOD. This means that Mulan will exclusively be available on Disney+ in the US. You won’t be able to see it in theaters. It’s an interesting gamble for Disney to release like this. What it really affects is how Black Widow will release.

If Mulan does well here, it might change the way that Disney releases their films for the time-being. With the COVID-19 pandemic raging and not showing any signs of slowing down in the US, this could be the new normal for the House of Mouse.

After Universal and AMC struck a deal earlier to share profits on VOD films, this could be a crushing blow. Disney is quite simply a juggernaut in the film industry, and their films are huge draws for box office numbers. With basically $38 coming from people to watch Mulan, who knows what it would be like for a Star Wars release, or the next Marvel film.
