After the massive Shadows of the Empire multi-media campaign, the Star Wars character of Dash Rendar developed a bit of a cult following. Often dubbed the “poor man’s Han Solo,” Rendar was cut from the same, Corellian cloth as our favorite, scruffy-looking nerf herder. He was a brash, arrogant, sarcastic and cynical smuggler. With Timothy Olyphant’s casting in The Mandalorian, speculation has begun with respect to whether good ‘ol Dash will make his way into live action. Here are a few reasons why he shouldn’t.
Based on what we’re hearing, The Mandalorian’s sophomore season will be chocked full of fan-service cameos. Temuera Morrison will reportedly play both Boba Fett and Captain Rex. Katee Sackhoff returns to Star Wars as Bo-Katan Kryze (in live-action, this time). And, of course, there’s Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. Do we now throw Dash Rendar into that mix, too? What made Season 1 of The Mandalorian great were its subtle nods to Star Wars history. How much is over the top?
Dash Rendar should not appear in The Mandalorian
It pains me to write those words, it really does. I’ve always loved the character. Likewise, I’d love to see the Outrider in action. But…. If it’s going to happen, it’s got to be right. Dash Rendar is loner, so yes, in theory, a cameo one-off could work. Notwithstanding, I don’t think that would be enough for most fans of the “other” Corellian scoundrel.
It certainly wouldn’t be for me. Of course, there’s always the possibility a cameo in The Mandalorian could lead to a spinoff series, as it’s rumored to for Ahsoka. If that were the case, then yes, by all means let Timothy Olyphant run with the character. In many ways the Deadwood star would be perfect.
