Director of Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit, What We Do In The Shadows, and the season finale of The Mandalorian, Taika Waititi is getting a shot at Star Wars. Straight from StarWars.com, Waititi is set to co-write and direct a feature in the Star Wars universe. Not to be outdone and thrown away in the media blitz of Waititi getting this job, the other writer has quite a pedigree herself. Krysty Wilson-Cairns, writer of 1917 is on board as well. Release dates for this project and the upcoming Disney+ show from Leslye Headland are unknown.
Why This Is Great News For Star Wars Fans
This is fantastic news for Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian was one of the most well-received pieces of Star Wars content in recent memory. That show is probably going to be the basis of what Star Wars is like for the forseeable future. Waititi did his part by directing the fantastic season finale. That in addition to his work with Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe must have put him on some short list for Star Wars. No matter what you think of the recent sequel movies there is a certain air of controversy surrounding them. Some loyal fans still love them but they weren’t up to snuff for a good portion of the fan-base also.
It sounds a lot like what Waititi did with Thor: Ragnarok. Thor was floundering after his second film Thor 2: The Dark World. In the span of two hours, Waititi rejuvenated the fun and wonder that Thor was lacking. The details for this are little to none other than Waititi being attached to direct and co-write with Wilson-Cairns. After hearing about these rumors earlier this year, it’s nice to finally see something from Star Wars about it. To release the news on May 4th is just the cherry on top.
I’m super excited to see what Taika Waititi can do with Star Wars and the vast universe that provides. We’ll have the story updated if any further news breaks. For more on this story, or any other Star Wars content, make sure to check back to That Hashtag Show.
