When former Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the Star War films were going on hiatus for a few years, we knew that Lucasfilm’s focus was shifting to its televised productions. Fast forward a few months. Season 2 of The Mandalorian doesn’t arrive until October, yet they’re already working on Season 3. We’ve gotten more casting news for the Cassian Andor series. And now we know that a third, live-action Star Wars show is coming from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.

As we reported yesterday, the show will be female-centric and likely take place at a “different point in the Star Wars timeline.” The question of exactly when the new series will occur remains a mystery. Still, there are three likely periods from which the new Star Wars show could deliver fresh storytelling. We’ll break down those three timeframes, and their likelihood as the setting for the new series. Let the speculation begin!

New Star Wars show: The High Republic

The High Republic is the first and easiest guess. Disney and Lucasfilm announced in February that the mysterious “Project Luminous” would focus on the era of the High Republic. That’s set roughly 200 years or so before the events of The Phantom Menace and will focus on the Jedi of the era. If the new Star Wars show is to be female centric, it could find its lead in character in Avar Kriss. She features prominently in the High Republic promo materials. The era launches this August in various print media; this could be a logical, follow-up tie-in. we’d lay odds here about 50/50.

Ahsoka Tano: A Star Wars Story

While The Mandalorian is set in the era following the Empire’s fall, the time period is still relatively untapped and ripe for Star Wars storytelling. Add to the discussion all the speculation about Rosario Dawson playing Ahoska in Season 2. The prevailing theory is that Ahoska will appear as a set-up for her own Star Wars show. Female centric… relatively unexplored era…. This choice makes the most sense, especially with the focus on Ahsoka in the final episodes of The Clone Wars. If you’re placing your bets, this is probably the place to set your chips.

The Old Republic

Old republic; David Benioff D.B. Weiss

The Old Republic is perhaps the era many fans of the old Expanded Universe most want to see. And let’s face it – we’ve already heard rumblings of an Old Republic series coming to Disney+. With characters like Darth Bane, Revan, and other fan favorites, there is a veritable bottomless well of source material. However…. There are still feature films to come beginning in 2020. Thus far, all signs have pointed to those films diving into the Old Republic in earnest.  On that basis, we don’t expect this period to find its way to the small screen for Disney+.
